The Blue Bonnet Teddy Bear Patrol’s goal is to place a Teddy Bear in the hands of every child in frightening situations where emergency personnel become involved. These toys are used at scenes of auto accidents, fires, domestic violence or any other moment where a child needs someone or something to hold on to. As a 100% volunteer organization, the patrol raises money to purchase and distribute the bears through fund-raising events and donor awareness.
The organization’s Texas chapter was founded approximately two years ago in Perrin, located approximately 16 miles north of Mineral Wells in Jack County, after organizer Doris Reed heard the story of two local children trapped in a vehicle during an auto accident. When Reed was told that rescuers weren’t provided with stuffed animals to give to scared or injured children, her familiarity with a Washington state chapter of the “Teddy Bear Patrol” led Reed to seek out other local volunteers to assist children in crisis. Approximately 1,440 teddy bears have been presented to first responders since the Texas chapter began its efforts approximately two years ago. |
