Taylor County Deputy Sheriff Walter Collins was remembered on January 8th during a dedication of the “Pine Street Shoot-Out” historical marker in Abilene. Pictured above are five descendents of the fallen officer, who attended the ceremonies : Dr. Charles A. Stephens (back row, far left), John R. Collins (back row, middle), Ross A. Collins (front row), Iris Collins Eaton (front row, second from right) and Ruth Chambers Lewis (front row, far right). Also pictured are Nancy Stephens (front row, far left), and Bill Harris (back row, far right). Deputy Collins died in the line of duty during a shoot-out over illegal gambling in Abilene, at the Cattle Exchange Saloon, January 8, 1884. His brother, Frank Collins, a city alderman, was mortally wounded during the same incident, and passed away from his injuries on March, 14, 1884. |
